Battlefield Area Clearance (BAC) is a broad term used for the clearance of Explosive Remnants of War (ERW). BAC includes activities such as a surface search of an area, which is when people walk shoulder to shoulder across the land, visually inspecting the ground for evidence of a hazard. It can also involve using procedures similar to those used in mine clearance, such as sub-surface searching in marked lanes.
